"If you can't beat them, powercreep them"
Welcome to our newest blog! For today's article, we'll feature the newly announced Byssted or Beasted archetype, the new archetype debuting in July 2022's main OCG booster pack Darkwing Blast.
Byssted Archetype in DABL |
Byssted is an all Dragon archetype that focuses on swarming the field by banishing a LIGHT or DARK monster and also aims to manipulate the graveyard with their D.D Crow like quick effects for as long as the opponent controls a monster. Like the usual, we'll do an archetype review and tech card review. For a change, I'll be also including a sample decklist to show how I envision Byssted to be built so far. Let's get started!
I. Byssted Monsters
Dragon/Special Summon/Effect, LIGHT, Lv 8, ATK 2500, DEF 3000
Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned (from your hand or GY) by Tributing 1 Level 6 or higher DARK Dragon monster. You can only Special Summon “The Byssted Lubellion(s)” once per turn this way. You can only use the 1st and 2nd effect of this card’s name each once per turn.
(1) You can send this card from your hand to the GY; add 1 “Byssted” monster from your Deck to your hand, except “The Byssted Lubellion”.
(2) During your Main Phase: You can place 1 “Branded” Continuous Spell/Trap from your Deck face-up in your Spell & Trap Zone.
Card Review:
The ace searcher of the archetype! It has the ability to special summon itself from hand or GY by just tributing a level 6 or higher DARK Dragon monster. It doesn't even specify Byssted monster so this monster can also take advantage of other DARK Dragon monsters.
By sending it to the GY, you can instantly add 1 Byssted monster from your deck to your hand. That helps the archetype fill an instant banish material as well as search the needed Byssted in that scenario. If you are able to summon it, you can also place a Branded Continuous Spell/Trap from your Deck face-up. The word place instantly tells you that this effect can bypass Ash Blossom. For me, this is a must have at 3 copies.
Dragon/Effect, DARK, Lv 6, ATK 2500, DEF 2000
You can only use the 1st and 2nd effect of this card’s name each once per turn.
(1) You can target 1 LIGHT or DARK monster in either GY; banish it, and if you do, Special Summon this card from your hand. This is a Quick Effect if your opponent controls a monster.
(2) If this card is Special Summoned: You can activate this effect; add 1 Dragon monster from your Deck or GY to your hand during the End Phase of this turn, except “Byssted Magnumut”.
Card Review:
Our first theme D.D crow. All of the three level 6 Byssted monsters has the same 1st effect. While this only banishes a LIGHT or DARK monster, this is a major threat as it's a harder to stop D.D crow that can mess around with the current OCG Tier 1 Tearalaments.
It has a beefy 2500 ATK that can instantly run over El-Shaddol Winda if that becomes a threat. When special summoned, you can search 1 Dragon monster from your Deck or GY during the end phase. The last line to only add during the end phase discourages it from being used as an instant Dragon searcher so most likely this is designed to search more Byssted that can eventually be used on opponent's turn. I'll put 3 of this as it helps propel the deck.
DABL-JP007 Byssted Saronir
Dragon/Effect, DARK, Lv 6, ATK 2500, DEF 2000
You can only use the 1st and 2nd effect of this card’s name each once per turn.
(1) You can target 1 LIGHT or DARK monster in either GY; banish it, and if you do, Special Summon this card from your hand. This is a Quick Effect if your opponent controls a monster.
(2) If this card is sent to the GY: You can send 1 “Byssted” monster, except “Byssted Saronir”, or 1 “Branded” Spell/Trap from your Deck to the GY.
Card Review:
Wait, is that the Unchained boss? Nope, it's another Byssted that looks similar. Like Byssted Magnumut, this monster can banish a LIGHT or DARK monster to special summon itself so long as they control a monster. When sent to graveyard, this one sends a Byssted monster or 1 Branded Spell/Trap from your Deck to the GY. The second effect helps fill your graveyard with more banish fodder. I'll put 3 for now.
DABL-JP008 Byssted Druidwurm
Dragon/Effect, DARK, Lv 6, ATK 2500, DEF 2000
You can only use the 1st and 2nd effect of this card’s name each once per turn.
(1) You can target 1 LIGHT or DARK monster in either GY; banish it, and if you do, Special Summon this card from your hand. This is a Quick Effect if your opponent controls a monster.
(2) If this card is sent from the field to the GY: You can target 1 opponent’s Special Summoned monster; send it to the GY.
Card Review:
Yeah, a blue lubellion! It has a similar first effect than the rest of the level 6. It's second effect allows you to send a Special Summoned monster to the GY ala Eldlich Golden Lord when it is sent from field to the GY. This works if this card is tributed for an effect or summon which is amazing. The second effect come in handy but since it doesn't propel the deck, I'd say 1-3 ratio-wise.
DABL-JP010 The Byssted Alba Los
Dragon/Special Summon/Effect, LIGHT, Lv 12, ATK 3500, DEF 3500
Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned (from your hand or GY) by Tributing 2 “Byssted” monsters.
(1) While you control this card Summoned this way, negate the effects of all Ritual, Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, and Link Monsters on the field.
(2) If this face-up card you control leaves the field by an opponent’s effect: You can banish all face-down cards in each player’s Extra Deck, face-up, until your opponent’s End Phase.
Card Review:
The boss monster of the archetype. You can summon it instantly by just tributing 2 Byssted monsters. When summoned, it negates all effects of Ritual, Fusion, Synchro, XYZ and Link monsters on the field while you control it. That effect is insane and is almost comparable to Supreme King Dragon Z-arc. When it leaves the field, it ensures that neither player can take advantage of their EX deck as it banishes all of them until the opponent's end phase.
While this monster instantly messes with most decks in the meta that are extra deck reliant, this doesn't have any protection from Spell/Trap or main deck monsters. Cards like Forbidden Droplet, Forbidden Chalice, Dark Ruler no More can instantly handle this card. I'll put 1 in the main deck.
II. Spell and Trap
DABL-JP053 Fukurakuin / Rebranded
Continuous Spell
You can only use the 1st effect of this card’s name once per turn, also you can only use the 2nd effect of this card’s name once per Chain.
(1) If a LIGHT and/or DARK monster(s) is banished: You can target 1 of them; place it on the bottom of the Deck, and if you do, draw 1 card.
(2) Once per turn, when your opponent Normal or Special Summons a monster(s): You can target 1 “Byssted” monster in your GY; Special Summon it.
Card Review:
This helps in recycling banished LIGHT and/or Dark for a draw in exchange. The second effect also helps in reviving your Byssted monsters who have fallen or dumped in GY. I don't see the second effect of this card would come in handy as Byssted level 6 monsters which are your only targets does are either already banished because you used them to summon the Byssted Lubellion or The Byssted Alba Los or perhaps will only act as a beater. I'd say 1 copy is enough in main. For me, it's a nice to have but not a priority.
DABL-JP073 Rakuin no Kemono / Branded Beast
Continuous Trap
You can only use the 2nd effect of this card’s name once per turn.
(1) Once per turn, during the Main Phase, if you control a “Byssted” monster: You can Tribute 1 Dragon monster, then target 1 card your opponent controls; destroy it.
(2) During the End Phase: You can target 1 “Branded” Continuous Spell/Trap in your GY; place it face-up on your field.
Card Review:
The lone trap of Byssted with a cool aluber art inside. The first effect works as a quick removal by tributing any Dragon monster to destroy any 1 card your opponent controls. The second effect, not so much. The only best possible target is another copy of itself or Rebranded. I'd say 1 copy will do as it is searchable.
III. Tech Cards
In this section, I'll put possible tech cards that may work with the theme. Depending on what other cards will release in DABL, that will dictate how useful this list will be.
WPP1-JP014 混沌領域(カオス・テリトリー) Chaos Territory (TCG: Chaos Space)
Normal Spell Card
You can only use each effect of this card’s name once per turn.
(1) Send 1 LIGHT or DARK monster from your hand to the GY; add 1 LIGHT or DARK monster that cannot be Normal Summoned/Set from your Deck to your hand, with a Level from 4 to 8, and with a different Attribute than that monster.
(2) You can banish this card from your GY, then target 1 of your banished LIGHT or DARK monsters that cannot be Normal Summoned/Set; place that monster on the bottom of the Deck, then draw 1 card.
Chaos Space screams like an instant 3-of in this deck unfortunately. Discarding your DARK monster can search the Byssted Lubellion as it fulfills the cannot be Normal Summoned/Set requirement. Usually, you will just used Byssted Lubellion to search for the level 6 Byssted Monster and use Byssted Lubellion to summon the searched monster. Chaos Space also mitigates the discard cost by returning the banished Byssted to the bottom of your Deck for a draw 1 which makes the search of Chaos Space painless. I'll put 3 (If I can) but this card is quite expensive. Perhaps we can wait for next year's SDR for Chaos Dragons?
Armageddon Knight, Dragon Shrine and Foolish Burial can send Byssted Saronir from your Deck to your Graveyard. Byssted Sarunir when sent to the GY for whatever reason can dump any Byssted from your Deck to your GY which means you have either two fodders for your summon.
You can also instantly dump Byssted Lubellion and The Byssted Alba Los with Sarunir. Hieratic Dragon Atumus can be summoned with your level 6 Byssted to summon any Dragon monster from your Deck to your field. Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon is a good target to revive your Dragon monster in your Graveyard or just simply summon Byssted Magnumut for an instant search on the end phase.
Deck Devastation Virus and Eradicator Epidemic Virus can be a good counter to decks like Splight and backrow reliant decks.
Thunder Dragons can be used as an engine to aid with supplying fodders for Byssted. You can also tech Thunder Dragon Colossus the turn you successfully used the hand effect of your preferred Thunder Dragon. Them being level 5 means you can use Byssted as your tribute fodder too.
IV. Sample Build
For a change, I will be sharing a sample build for Byssted. This build is designed for OCG but can work in TCG by changing Maxx "C" and the ratio of some cards.
The deckbuild focuses on ensuring that you have something to banish in grave. Thunder Dragon is a nice tech that can dump 2 additional Thunder Dragon in GY if you use its effect twice allowing your Byssted to have a banish fodder in GY.
Thunder Dragon can then be used to summon Thunder Dragon Colossus if necessary. Rebranded can shuffle back the banished Thunder Dragon to your Deck for an additional draw.
Summary:
Similar to Kshatri-La, Byssted looks good on paper but feels incomplete. The archetype is fairly new and for sure we'll get to see more support cards that can make them more playable. The upperhand of Byssted is its good match-up against Tearalaments and this is why it can be considered as a threat. Meta or not - that's what we'll find out! Hope you enjoy today's article!
Arcknight
