Notice me, "Tenpai"! - My 1st Place "Tenpai" Deck Profile

Hey ya'll! It's me again, ArcKnight. I am finally back with another deck profile/tournament report featuring one of coolest OTK decks I have tried which is "Tenpai Dragons" where I won 1st place in the recent OCG ranking. What's interesting is I didn't have one of their key OTK cards in my extra deck.

Without further ado, let's talk about this new theme "Tenpai", and why it deserves our attention.

Here's a breakdown of what I will share today:
I. What is "Tenpai"?
II. Why did I choose this deck?
III. Deck Profile
IV. Tech choice and ratio explanation (Why no Trident Dragion?)
V. Summary

I. What is "Tenpai"?

"Tenpai" is a new FIRE Dragon-theme that is released in LEGACY OF DESTRUCTION that has a strategy of achieving a One-Turn-Kill (OTK) consistently. The combo is very straightforward and OTK can easily be achieved with the help of their support cards. It also includes a lot of 1-card combos which is suitable in a format full of 1-card combos.

II. Why did I choose "Tenpai Dragon"?

For those of you who have followed my recent tournament reports, you'll notice that I love exploring different decks. Before I choose a deck, I ensure that I monitor the local meta scene. It is crucial as there are times popular decks gets sided a lot which halts the deck's performance.

I chose "Tenpai Dragon" this time because the deck is fairly new and it's straightforward. The deck is surprisingly consistent on its wave 1 release and can end games pretty quickly. (You'll end up having time to grab a quick snack after the match before the next round starts xD)

I also like that it can still OTK despite of Dimension shifter existing. (I also want to have some breather after using "Voiceless Voice" in 623572538 times)

III. Deck Profile

Here is the decklist that I used.

R1: Mathmech 2-0
R2: Magician 2-0
R3: Horus Control 2-1

Result: 1st Place 3-0

IV. Tech Choice and Ratio Explanation

I know what you're thinking...why no "Trident Dragion"?

It's simple, I don't own one xD (Drum beats)

Part of the reason why I decided to use a "Trident-less" Tenpai is because I wanted to experiment if the OTK is still achievable without Trident. After testing, I found that an OTK is still possible even without it. You can still OTK even if you are only using their theme cards. If given a chance, I'd stll get a copy of "Trident Dragion" just in case.

I have 23 handtraps as I find it more flexible than go-second board breaker cards. I prefer hand traps as it still has that element of surprise whenever I go 1st or go second. I also like the idea of playing Dimension Shifter as it automatically shuts down most decks in the meta.

Depending on my opponent deck, I'd always would want to go second due to the following reasons:

1. You get 6 cards during your turn as your starting hand. That extra draw means a lot in an OTK deck.
2. Obviously, your cards shine during the battle phase. This reminds me of my "Ancient Gear" going second strategy and "Gren Maju OTK".
3. You don't get a battle phase when you go first. I'm also not sure if the Ultimaya Route and Dragon link route is worth it as once Maxx "C" is used against you, you would most likely discontinue swarming anyway. Also, it discourages you from playing Dimension Shifter because you need the GY to achieve your first turn combo if you decide to do that over a Hieratic Seal of Spheres. (Like I always say, I attract Maxx "C" lmao)

V. Summary

"Tenpai Dragon", while a new theme, already showed results in the meta scene and it's been a while that we had a deck that can confidently go second. I'm excited to see what else is in store in the next sets for them. Since "Tenpai Dragon" is quite weak going first, I am seeing a lot of deck lists that include different going first engines or just "Heatwave". I will definitely update this decklist from time to time so stay tuned.
