Here's why this ONE card can help boost "Memento"? | Single card discussion featuring "Memento Attic Ghost" in PHNI

Greetings duelists, ArcKnight here! I'm back with another discussion article and this time, we'll feature the newest "Memento" monster revealed in PHANTOM NIGHTMARE (PHNI) called "Memento Attic Ghost"/ "Memento Uramon"!

Will this attic ghost finally see the light? Let's find out today.

Backstory:
For those who followed my X account @Respect_YGO and YouTube account @RespectYGO, you saw how I cope so hard in getting a new "Memento" that can boost the theme to meta relevancy. I also attempted to create an archetype review article pre-PHNI although unfortunately, Blogger had a bug and it wiped all the things I wrote so I was a little bit disheartened.

Usually, deck build pack themes only receive an archetype boost on the second main set (Like PHHY,DUNE, AGOV, etc.) after its debut. Turns out, the release of "Memento Attic Ghost" broke this pattern (AFAIK) and they immediately received their support right away in PHANTOM NIGHTMARE. I'm so glad it happened since I already conditioned my body and soul in coping 'til LEGACY OF DESTRUCTION (JAN 2024) and it's a support that is nothing to scoff at either.

Let's have a quick summary of the archetype, shall we?

"Memento" as a theme revolves around destroying "Memento" cards and gathering 5 different named "Memento" monsters in the GY to summon their ultimate boss monster that is "Mementoral Tecuhtlica, the Netherskull Dragon".

Their boss has a massive 5000 ATK and DEF that can attack all monsters which can lead to a potential OTK. It is by far the strongest Deck Build Pack boss monster in terms of ATK and DEF stats. Its other effect allows you to revive any fallen "Memento" monster as soon as he sees a card or effect activation of your opponent and other "Memento Goblin" and "Memento Mace" provides protection and field control respectively.

The theme also has several consistency cards that can search one another such as "Memento Dark Blade", "Memento Fairywitch", "Memento Tatsunooshigo", and "Memento Bone Party". When it comes to set-up, one card that stands out is their continuous trap called "Memento Cranium Burst" which allows the player to negate up to 5 times by reducing the boss monster stats by 1000. Reminds me of Apollousa.

What does it lack as a theme?

After several tests, I found that "Memento" lacks a "Memento" monster that generates advantage when sent to the GY. To create the set-up of Mementoral with backrow, you would need to have their field spell just so you can further extend.

Will the Ghost in the attic help them finally see the light?

PHANTOM NIGHTMARE revealed a new "Memento" monster last Sunday. Nope, it's not "Kuriboh" but a retrain of the classic "Ghost Wretched from the Attic". It has an effect that can recycle any other "Memento" card when summoned and can also revive itself from the ashes when it is sent to the GY by a "Memento" monster.

Finally, a "Memento" name that provides free card advantage when sent to GY and it also recycles! At first glance, you may think that this is just a late game card and another name. WRONG (Insert Thunder SFX)

This card helps "Memento" in a lot of ways like allowing you to have even more 1 card starters and a way to set-up their Field Spell without relying on hard drawing it or using Terraforming to search it.

Pros:
  • "Memento Goblin" becomes a 1 card starter now that can lead to Mementoral on its own. Use its effect to send "Memento Attic Ghost" and "Memento Bone Party". By doing so, you can revive "Memento Attic Ghost" and return "Memento Bone Party" back to hand. "Memento Bone Party" can destroy "Memento Ghost Attic" to summon "Memento Dark Blade" and go from there.
  • "Memento Bone Party" + a "Memento" name can now lead to a Mementoral with Trap set-up. Simply use "Memento Bone Party" to summon "Memento DarkBlade" then summon "Memento Fairywitch". "Memento Fairywitch" can search "Memento Tatsunooshingo" which can destroy itself to send "Memento Mace", "Memento Goblin", and "Memento Ghost Attic". Ghost Attic will trigger and revive itself and recycle "Memento Mace". Since you haven't used your normal summon, you can summon "Memento Mace" to destroy itself and add their field spell. Revive "Memento Goblin" using "Memento Fairywitch" and send Cranium burst and tectolica. You know the drill.

What's next?

"Memento" is a very promising theme and will definitely receive more boosts in the future. Unlike other themes like "Rescue Ace", "Purrely", and "Mikanko",  "Memento" falls short on its weakness against common hand traps. I like that "Memento" is now more consistent than ever although I feel that they need a better win condition than setting up a fragile 5000 big boss with 5 monster effect negates. I want to see an Extra Deck support that can solidify the combo. This has been hinted in Tecuhtlica's summoning condition but the question now is..when will that happen?

Thanks for reading 'til the end and make sure to comment on what you'd like to see next in the "Memento" archetype!
