Are the new "Yubel" cards in PHANTOM NIGHTMARE enough to break the meta? | Archetype Review

Hey everyone! Arcknight here and I'm back with another archetype review. Today, I'll cover the new Yubel support cards that will be released in the October main set of OCG which is PHANTOM NIGHTMARE (PHNI). Is it strong enough to become a meta contender? Let's find out!

Without further ado, let's get started!

1. Introduction
In Dimension Arc of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, Yubel is the primary antagonist. The archetype involves a series of DARK Fiend monsters that depicts different forms of Yubels as well as other supporting cards that help propel the strategy. The series debuted in PHANTOM DARKNESS (PTDN) and has received new support in PHANTOM NIGHTMARE (PHNI).

The initial strategy of the deck involves Yubel and taking advantage of its effect to deal massive damage when it battles. It is kinda similar to the playstyle of the new Mikanko archetype wherein the you use your opponent's monster to deal massive damage.

The new cards in PHANTOM NIGHTMARE elevated this strategy by adding cards that add consistency, force opponent's monsters to battle Yubel, and fuse opponent's monster to your Yubel to summon your new Yubel fusion monster.

2. New Card Discussion

Let's discuss the new cards in PHNI. Note that the ratios are only based on my initial observation and opinion. You are free to play around with the ratios on testing.

A. Spirit of Yubel

Review:

This monster is a retrain of the original Yubel and it has four effects! Its first effect is a hand trap effect that can save you from a potential OTK which is neat.

Its second effect allows you to add or directly set a Spell/Trap that mentions Yubel in its text. That search effect is definitely needed in a deck like Yubel although I wished it just sets and activates directly so that it isnt prone to Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring but I wouldn't complain to a consistency boost nevertheless.

Its third effect is a standard Yubel continuous effect where it has battle and LP damage immunity. Fourth effect lets you combo it with their new spell Nightmare Pain to summon the original Yubel from Hand, Deck, or GY.

Overall, this card is a must have in the new Yubel deck.

Ratio: I'll put 3 copies. 2 is also optimal as you would want to start instead with the new Samsara Lotus rather than drawing it but it's based on your preference.

B. Geist Grinder Golem

Review:

The retrain of Grinder Golem and has effects reminiscent of its former version. Its first effect allows you to have an instant 3K attack to smash on your opponent's field and helps you unclog drad Yubel in hand.

Its second effect helps you gain a massive 3000 LP (mandatory) when it battles a Yubel monster. Since this monster will be in your opponent's field, you will be the one to gain LP instead.

Its third effect recycles itself back to opponent's field and be a bait for your own Yubel. It would be funny once people play Yubel and it's a mirror match as people will no longer battle their opponent's real monster and instead battle their own copies of Geist Grinder Golem :))

Ratio: 0-1 copies. 1 copy would be optimal as it is searchable by their new Spell Card. Adding more would cause brick issues.

C. Samsara Regenerating Lotus

Review:

It is Yubel's version of Lonefire Blossom which can tutor any Yubel mobster from your Deck.

Its second effect provides monster effect protection by replacing it with an effect that destroys 1 Yubel monster on the field. It helps in triggering Spirit of Yubel's effect to summon Yubel from anywhere (Hand, Deck, or GY) when destroyed. Be careful when using it when you already control Yubel as Yubel only has protection from battle and it might leave you defenseless.

Its third effect recycles itself back to hand or field during your end phase so long as you control Yubel (the original one). This effect is helpful on grind game to bring back card advantage.

Ratio: 3 copies (No questions asked)

D. Yubel - Das Ewig Lieve Wachter

Review:

Yubel's very own fusion monster and the artwork looks similar to Jaden Yuki's ace fusion monster Elemental HERO Flame Wingman. The materials is just 1 Yubel monster + 1 or more effect monsters on the field. That alone screams Super Polymerization but let's not forget that Fallen of Albaz can steal your Yubel to summon their own Yubel fusion. (But that's another story :D) The material is generic enough to put the entire opponent's monster board as a food of Yubel via Super Polymerization or their new trap.

Its first effect inflicts 500 burn damage to your opponent per material used. The lowest damage that they can take is 1000 and the maximum is 3500 (6 zones with extra zones if every monster is used on their field - 4000 7 if Co- link). This is a good alternate win condition which can come in handy on grind games.

Its second effect provides protection to itself from battle, damage, and card effect destruction. It combos really well with Samsara Regenerating Lotus.

Its third effect acts as a monster removal when it battles an opponent's monster and it can also deal massive damage. The banish removal is also non targeting.

Ratio: 1-3 copies. 3 if you're using Pot of Extravagance or Prosperity.

E. Nightmare Pain

Review:

One of your go-to searches with Spirit of Yubel. Its first effect lets you destroy 1 DARK monster from your hand or field to add Yubel or any 1 card that has Yubel its text. It can help you search even Samsara Regenerating Lotus, Geist Grinder Golem or Eternal Favorite, to name a few.

Its second effect works like Battle Mania where it forces opponent's monsters to attack your Yubel monster if possible which can help you trigger Yubel's damage inflicting effect.

Its third effect provides additional burn damage when they battle your Yubel monsters instead. When combined with their new Fusion monster, you can deal double the damage which may be enough to finish them off at certain occassions.

Ratio: 2-3 copies.

F: Mature Chronicle

Review:

This is Spell Chronicle's retrain where it takes advantage of Chronicle Counters to use any of the 5 effects. When starting with Samsara Regenerating Lotus going to Spirit of Yubel, Nightmare Pain, and the original Yubel, you are guaranteed to have at least 2 counters which allows you to recycle 1 of your banished cards or revive a Yubel. For me, it is a nice to have on late game though I don't think it'll be that necessary.

Ratio: 0-1 copy

G. Eternal Favorite

Review:

This trap card gives you two choices: either revive a Yubel monster or fusion summon ala Super Polymerization on either field including a Yubel monster. Eternal Favorite is searchable by Nightmare Pain and Spirit of Yubel so you wouldn't have to run multiple copies. It's a decent trap card that can act as a surprise disruption that can really mess your opponent's set-up.

Ratio: 1-2 copies

3. Tech Card Discussion

Let's talk about some of the cards that you might want to consider. There might be more but these are what's on top of my head :))

A. Yubel - You would want to include at least 1 copy of it as it can be summoned by Spirit of Yubel and Eternal Favorite anyway. You can also include 1 of each of its dragon version but I feel that those are outclassed by Yubel's new fusion so it's up to you.

B. Super Polymerization - It's a good card to abuse the material requirement of Yubel's new fusion and it is searchable by Mature Chronicle.

C. Small World - Samsara Regenerating Lotus has 0 Attack and your Ghost Girls have 0 ATK too so you know the drill. You just need to figure out the perfect lines.

D. Pot of Extravagance / Pot of Prosperity - Yubel isnt that reliant on their new fusion to win and there's also a bunch of Generic DARK fusion monster to utilize when necessary. Just be wary of that Droll & Lock Bird.

E. Floodgates (There Can Be Only One, Gozen Match, Rivalry of Warlords) - When combined with Geist Grinder Golem, you can prevent your opponent from summoning at all (Unless their decks are susceptible to those mentioned floodgate).

4. Summary

After 16 years, Yubel finally received its much needed archetype support that revolves around its main win condition which is you deal massive damage. October will be an exciting month as we'll finally witness if these support cards are enough to impact the meta. This is an anime theme and usually series 12 booster box include generic cards that compliments strategies of themes included in the box.

I'm hopeful to see more cards and themes get their much needed support in PHANTOM NIGHTMARE soon. What are your thoughts on the new Yubel cards?
