"Things are getting out of hand!" - The rise of "Splight - Brigade Darkwing Blast (DABL) review

Hey everyone! Today, we just received an updated here about the two new Splight スプライト cards in Darkwing Blast and I figured to make a quick review based on what I have researched.

Things are getting out of hand!

I have been waiting for them to reveal these cards yesterday in the stream and they didn't reveal it but finally they are here! The question is, are they worth the wait? How does it help Splights? Is this their comeback to Tier 0 status? Let's find out.

A new Link 2 has arrived!

DABL-JP048 Splight Sprind
Link 2 FIRE Thunder Link Effect Monster
ATK 1400
Links: Bottom Left, Top Right
2 monsters, including a Level/Rank/Link-2 monster
You can only use 1 of the 1st and 2nd effect of this card’s name per turn, and only once that turn. Cannot be used as Link Material the turn it was Link Summoned.
(1) If this card is Link Summoned: You can send 1 Level 2 monster from your Deck to the GY.
(2) If another monster(s) is Special Summoned while this monster is on the field: You can detach 1 material from your Xyz Monster, then target 1 monster on the field; return it to the hand.

Card Review

Post July 2022 Ban list, the strategy of Splight changed a lot particularly the end board. From Toadally Awesome, it changed to either I:P Masquerena to Union Carrier. Splight Sprind is a new generic link 2 that can dump any level 2 monster from your Deck to the GY. Yep, ANY LEVEL 2 in the phone book. That effect alone is quite broken as the targets are limitless and that's what we will share later.

They have been teasing us with this link

The part where it cannot be used as a Link material the turn it is summoned doesn't stop the fact it can still be used as an XYZ material for Gigantic Splight. The third effect can be used as a way to bounce any monster on the field and that include yours. You can either bounce a threat from your opponent or bounce the Maxx "C" you just searched in OCG. The only downside is it requires a detach from an XYZ monster you control so it requires some set-up. Overall, it's a really nice addition to the Splight Brigade (oops).

Finally, a trap card!

DABL-JP074 Splight Double Cross
Normal Trap
You can only activate 1 card with this card’s name per turn.
(1) Target 1 monster on the field or in the GY to activate 1 of these effects;
● Attach it to your Rank 2 monster as material.
● If your opponent controls it, place it in your zone your Link-2 monster points to and take control of it.
● If it is in the GY, Special Summon it to your zone your Link-2 monster points to.

Card Review

Of course, we're getting our first Splight trap card. Splight Double Cross has three different effects depending on your preference and you can only activate one of them. Once you targeted a monster on the field or in any Graveyard, you can either attach it to your Rank 2 monster as material, take control of it and place it in the zone where your Link-2 is pointing or just straight out Special Summon it.

Here are other things you can do:
  • Prevent Tearalaments from fusion summoning - You can choose to revive a monster and target the one they just sent. After resolution, you revive or attach it to your XYZ as material and you already prevented their fusion summoning. This can also help clear floaters like Tearalaments Kitkalos and Tearalaments Kaleidoheart out of your way. If you use this as Chain Link 3 when they discarded Kelbek and Agido with Herald of Orange Light, use this to attach or revive it so its effect to send cards to the Graveyard will miss the timing.
  • Dodge Called by the Grave - Aside from Splight Elf reviving Maxx "C" for that occasional dodge, you can now revive Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Dimension Shifter, Effect Veiler and any other game breaking handtraps to dodge Called by the Grave.
Overall, the card is really good with only conditions as the requirement (Controlling a Link 2 or have an XYZ monster). I feel that this could already replace Splight Smashers as a defensive card that is versatile enough to counter the current meta but we'll see.

Splight Brigade

Splight Brigade

Tri-Brigade is a theme that received a boost in the form of Splight Sprind

Splight Sprind can send any level 2 monster from your Deck to your GY which means you can send Tri-Brigade Kitt. Tri-Brigade Kitt can then send another Tri-Brigade (Tri-Brigade Nervall) which can search another Tri-Brigade. If you haven't used your normal summon or has a way to discard for Tri-Brigade Kerass, you can use it to summon Tri-Brigade Bear Bloom for a Tri-Brigade Revolt Search or summon the Ancient Warrior's Oath Double Dragon Lords.

Nimble Splight

Nimble Angler is a very old card from Abyss Rising that when sent to your GY from hand or Deck, it can special summon up to two Nimble monster from your Deck. Splight Sprind doesn't have any restriction what level 2 to send nor have any summoning restrictions thereafter which screams Nimble Angler.

This guarantees you with an extra 2 level 2 monsters you can use for an XYZ summon or a link summon. Since Nimble Angler only activates when sent from hand or deck and cannot summon another copy of itself, I'd say 1 copy is enough (if you can find one now as we speak).

Soul Scissors

DABL-JP029 Soul Scissors
Fiend/Effect, DARK, Lv 2, ATK 550, DEF 350
You can only use the 1st and 2nd effect of this card’s name each once per turn.
(1) If a monster(s) on the field is destroyed by battle or card effect and sent to the GY while this card is in your GY: You can Special Summon this card, but banish it when it leaves the field.
(2) If this card is Special Summoned from the GY: You can target 1 monster your opponent controls; destroy it.

Soul Scissors is a new level 2 card and now it makes more sense as it can be sent with the help of Splight Sprind. When special summoned from the GY, it can destroy a monster on your opponent's field. You can send this as additional defense as it can be revived by Splight Elf.

Summary

Splight wave 2 supports has been predicted by many and while it did not replace the good 'ol Toadally Awesome, it did open a new path for combos that could be meta relevant.

Therions and Captain Sarga's armor.

We still have few more days until the release of Darkwing Blast in July 16 and there are still slots left unrevealed. If things are really getting out of hand and this would raise the bar up high for Splights once again, that's something that we can look forward to. What are your thoughts on the new Splight cards?
