Is "Kshatri-La Fenrir" worth the hype? Here's what we think.

Hello everyone! I'm back with another article as we start the month of August. Today, I'm going to discuss an interesting tech card that debuted in the latest OCG booster pack called Darkwing Blast which was released in July 16th.

Is Kshatrila Fenrir the new Dinowrestler Pankratops?

It's been 2 weeks since the release of Darkwing Blast main booster pack and while there are a lot of interesting cards that shone in today's meta game, there is one rare card that has the brightest star in OCG and that is Kshatri-La Fenrir. Why did it become so popular? Let's dive in!

Let's have a quick review on what this card does.

DABL-JP012 Kshatri-La Fenrir
Level 7 EARTH Psychic Effect Monster
ATK 2400
DEF 2400
You can only use the 2nd and 3rd effect of this card’s name each once per turn.
(1) If you control no monsters, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand).
(2) During your Main Phase: You can add 1 “Kshatri-La” monster from your Deck to your hand.
(3) When this card declares an attack, OR if your opponent activates a monster effect: You can target 1 face-up card your opponent controls; banish it face-down.

First look

Kshatri-La Fenrir is part of the new Kshatri-La archetype that is comprised of level 7 monsters that can special summon itself while you control no monsters and has a third effect that can banish a card face-down from somewhere if the opponent activated an effect or when it declares an attack. The monsters doesn't have any hard restrictions so it could be included in decks that have space for it.

Kshatri-La Fenrir caught the attention of many as not only it can banish a face-up card on your opponent's field face down when they activated an effect or it declares an attack but also its ability to add even another copy of itself. It is reminiscent of how Dinowrestler Pankratops made its impact making it a potential threat for your opponent by itself.

Card Review
I have tested this tech card for the past two weeks and have also observed game plays where it was used and here are my personal insights.

Pros
  • You can special summon itself when you control no monsters and doesn't require any monster from your opponent unlike Dinowrestler Pankratops
  • Its special summon doesn't start a chain. (Inherent like Cyber Dragon)
  • It can add another copy of itself from your Deck to your hand which results to +1 in hand advantage.
  • It banishes a card on your opponent's field face-down so it's harder for your opponent to recover the banished card nor allow it to activate its effect when it leaves the field.
  • It has a solid 2400 ATK and DEF for a monster that you can special summon at literally no cost making it a solid wall to most monsters that can be normal summoned or even Tearlaments Kitkallos' 2300 ATK!
  • It targets any 1 face-up card your opponent controls whether it'd be a monster or a face-up Spell or Trap.
  • Its 3rd effect activation requirement (the one that banishes a card on the field face-down) is easy to trigger as it only requires a monster effect activated and it can also activate when it declares an attack.
Cons
  • Its 3rd effect that can banish a face-up card face-down on the field is a targeting effect making it futile to boss monsters that is immune to targeting such as Mekk-Knight Crusadia Avramax.
  • Unlike Dinowrestler Pankratops, Kshatri-La Fenrir's third effect isn't quick but a trigger effect so you cannot banish a card until the activated monster effect happens and this monster has to be face-up when its 3rd effect activates in a new chain. For example, Man-Eater Bug activates its effect and destroys Kshatri-La Fenrir, Kshatri-La Fenrir can't immediately use its effect to banish Man-Eater Bug as it will be destroyed already and won't have the chance to activate its 3rd effect even if it saw the effect activated. If the opponent's Man-Eater Bug chose to destroy a different card and Kshatri-La Fenrir is still on your field, it can use its third effect to target 1 face-up card your opponent controls in a new window. (Note: This is based on testing and comparison to existing cards)
  • When you already have an established field, copies of Kshatri-La Fenrir in hand will be unusable until you find a way to normal summon it (tribute summon) or special summon.
Summary
Overall, the card is pretty good and the pros of this card compensates the cons which are actually quite minor versus the advantage that you can get from a monster that you can summon instantly and can generate card advantage and field threat.

Based on testing, this card really shines when I go second as this guarantees me a possible face-up card target on my opponent's field that I can banish when it declares an attack. I can also make my opponent think twice to activate a monster effect as that could cost them field advantage. In the past two weeks, I would say that this is one of the cards that made the most impact in the OCG scene that I can see people either putting in main deck or in side deck in this format.

Will this be a mainstay in every deck? That's what we're going to find out in the coming weeks. Does it deserve the hype it is getting? I'd say well deserved. What do you think of the new Kshatri-La Fenrir?
