"Gotta Catch 'em All!" - New Archetype "Purery" | Guide and Review

Heya! How's it going? Today, I'm going to do another review of a new archetype revealed in Deck Build Pack: Amazing Defenders and it is no other than Purery!

New Archetype - Purery debuting in DBAD

Like the usual, we will have a short introduction, card spoiler, tech card suggestions and overall review. Join me as we enter the world of Purery! Purrrrrrrrrr.

Introduction

Can you be my pet? :)

Purery is an archetype which revolves around their lone main deck monster revealed called Purery. With the help of their quick play spells, each Purery can evolve into a Purery XYZ that has cool abilities.

The archetype also has Quick Play Spells that can as either a protection or starter which makes the theme quite consistent at first glance. The best part is their quick play spells and the main deck monster isn't even once per turn per name. Think of it as a reminiscent of how Sky Striker was first revealed.

I know that it sounds exciting but let's have a review on what the theme does.

Welcome to Purery Street!

DBAD-JP013 Purery
Level 1 LIGHT Fairy Effect Monster
ATK 100
DEF 100
(1) If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can excavate the top 3 cards of your Deck, you can add 1 excavated “Purery” Spell/Trap to your hand, also place the rest on the bottom of the Deck in any order.
(2) Once per turn: You can reveal 1 “Purery” Quick-Play Spell in your hand, and if you do, Special Summon 1 Xyz Monster that mentions it from your Extra Deck, using this face-up card you control as material (this is treated as an Xyz Summon), and if you do, attach the revealed card to it as additional material.

Pros
  • An instant +1 when normal or special summoned and it can help you dig those important Spell/Traps.
  • It can instantly XYZ summon your Purery Xyz monster by itself provided that you can reveal a Purery Quick Play spell.
  • As you can see, it isn't hard once per turn based on the translations.
  • Doesn't have any effect or special summon restriction when effects are used.
  • Cute artwork. Something that can brighten up your day. :D
Cons
  • Weak stats. Can easily be ran over by usual level 4 or lower monsters.
  • The part where it can summon an XYZ monster isn't quick so it is susceptible to card removals before you can even perform the XYZ summon.
Possible Ratio: I'd say 3 since it's your go-to consistency card.

DBAD-JP014 Epurery Happiness
Rank 2 LIGHT Fairy Xyz Effect Monster
ATK 2000
DEF 100
Materials: 2 Level 2 monsters
(1) If this card battles, at the end of the Damage Step: You can add 1 “Purery” card from your Deck to your hand, also, if this card has “Purery Happy Memory” as material, you can make the ATK of 1 face-up monster on the field become halved.
(2) Thrice per turn, when you activate a “Purery” Quick-Play Spell Card (Quick Effect): You can attach that card on the field to this card as material, then you can return 1 Spell/Trap your opponent controls to the hand.

Pros
  • It can search any Purery card from deck to your hand and it isn't once per turn. If you find a way to let this monster battle multiple times then you can add a card for every occurence.
  • It can weaken the ATK of 1 face-up monster on the field by half when it has Purery Happy Memory as material.
  • It can turn used Purery Quick Play spells as material and can also help in clearing backrows.
  • The second effect can be used up to three times!
  • It's a generic rank 2 XYZ (Sprights *cough*) although its effect doesn't benefit other theme other than its own so it's pretty balanced.
  • It has huge ATK for a rank 2 so that's a plus.
Cons
  • It needs to battle before it can add a Purery card.
Possible Ratio: 2-3 copies in the Extra Deck.

DBAD-JP015 Epurery Beauty
Rank 2 WATER Fairy Xyz Effect Monster
ATK 1600
DEF 1100
Materials: 2 Level 2 monsters
(1) Once per turn: You can target 1 Effect Monster your opponent controls; its effects are negated until the end of the turn. This is a Quick Effect if this card has “Purery Pretty Memory” as material.
(2) Thrice per turn, when you activate a “Purery” Quick-Play Spell Card (Quick Effect): You can attach that card on the field to this card as material, then you can change 1 opponent’s monster’s battle position.

Pros
  • Its effect to target 1 Effect Monster your opponent controls and negate it doesn't require a material to detach and can be quick effect on your opponent's turn if you have Purery Pretty Memory as a material (which is usually guaranteed if you use Purery to summon this card.)
  • Its second effect to attach used Purery Quick Play spells activated can be used up to Thrice per turn and doesn't even involve detaching.
  • Every Purery Quick Play spell card attached using its second effect guarantees you with a battle protection as it can change battle position. You can use it defensively or offensively too,
Cons
  • Mid range stats but at least it can protect itself from battle with its 2nd effect.
Possible Ratio: 1-3

DBAD-JP016 Epurery Plump
Rank 2 EARTH Fairy Xyz Effect Monster
ATK 200
DEF 2100
Materials: 2 Level 2 monsters
(1) Once per turn: You can target up to 2 Spells/Traps in the GYs; attach them to this card as material. This is a Quick Effect if this card has “Purery Delicious Memory” as material.
(2) Thrice per turn, when you activate a “Purery” Quick-Play Spell Card (Quick Effect): You can attach that card on the field to this card as material, then you can banish 1 monster on the field until the End Phase.

Pros
  • Generic rank 2.
  • Can easily fulfill the other summoning requirement of their Rank 7.
  • Its effects do not need to detach any material.
  • Can also attach other Spell/Trap cards not just Purery Spell or Traps and in any GYs so it can also counter Eldlich and Sky Striker.
  • If you use its effect to attach 2 Spell/Traps in the GYs and it you perform a battle, you can summon Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS - Sky Thunder with at least 6 materials for 3 time board wipe if you also summon Downerd Magician on top of it. (This is quite scary to be honest).
  • Its second effect can be used up to thrice per turn.
  • It can make use of Purery Quick Play Spells as additional materials and can banish 1 monster on the field in exchange.
  • The effect to banish 1 monster doesn't target.
Cons
  • Very weak ATK so most likely, you will let your other Xyz monster to take the offensive if you want to maximize its xyz material stacking capabilities for your Zeus summon. (Unless your lucky to direct attack or protect it using the Purely Quick Play Spell.
Possible Ratio: 1-3

DBAD-JP017 Expurery Happiness
Rank 7 LIGHT Fairy Effect Monster
ATK 2500
DEF 1100
Materials: 2 Level 7 monsters
You can also Xyz Summon this card by using a Rank 2 monster you control with 5 or more materials. (Transfer its materials to this card.)
(1) During your Main Phase: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, and if you do, negate the effects of all face-up monsters your opponent currently controls until the end of the turn. If this card has a Level 1 “Purery” monster as material, your opponent cannot activate cards or effects in response to this effect’s activation.
(2) When an attack is declared involving this card with 5 or more materials: Inflict 1500 damage to your opponent.

Pros
  • Can use any Rank 2 monster you control as material as an alternate method of summon,
  • Its first effect cannot be responded to when it has level 1 Purery as material.
  • It can burn at a massive 1500 LP when attack is declared involving itself and this isn't once per turn so you can inflict damage for every attack declaration occurrence involving this card.
  • Has a decent 2500 ATK.
Cons
  • It requires the Rank 2 monster to have at least 5 materials first.
  • The burn effect requires it to have at least 5 materials.
  • The negation effect isn't quick and only affects face-up monsters your opponent currently controls.
Possible Ratio: I'd say 1-2. I'd prefer to summon Zeus over this card unless otherwise I'm aiming for the burn damage or a threatening field full of monster negation before I summon Zeus.

DBAD-JP019 Stray Purery Street
Field Spell Card
(1) Your opponent cannot target “Purery” monsters you control with card effects the turn they were Special Summoned.
(2) Once per turn, if a face-up “Purery” Xyz Monster you control leaves the field by your opponent: Special Summon 1 Level 1 “Purery” monster from your Deck or GY.
(3) During each End Phase: You can target 1 “Purery” Xyz Monster on the field; attach 1 “Purery” Quick-Play Spell from your Deck or GY to it as material.

Pros
  • It acts as your protection against targeting effects that would prevent your Purery from using their effects such us Infinite Impermanence and Effect Veiler.
  • It makes your Purery Xyz monsters a floater by allowing you to special summon a Purery monster from your Deck or GY when a Purery Xyz monster you control is destroyed.
  • It helps you stack Purery Quick Play Spell as material every end of the turn.
Cons
  • The protection is only for Purery monster the turn they are Special Summoned. It doesn't protect you from Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring nor Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit.
  • Its effect to bring out a level 1 Purery relies on your opponent and it doesn't do anything that can propel your plays upon activation.
Possible Ratio: I'd say 0-1.

DBAD-JP020 Purery, My Friend
Continuous Spell Card
You can only use the 1st and 2nd effect of this card’s name once per turn.
(1) You can pay 500 LP; reveal 3 “Purery” cards from your Deck, except “Purery, My Friend”, and if you do, your opponent randomly picks 1 for you to add to your hand, also shuffle the rest back into the Deck.
(2) If a face-up “Purery” Xyz Monster you control leaves the field by your opponent (even during the Damage Step): You can add up to 3 “Purery” Quick-Play Spells with different names from your GY to your hand.

Pros
  • You can instantly search the Purery card that you want if you reveal 3 copies of the same name except Purery, My Friend despite of the word random so it's nice that it's not requiring you to reveal different named Purery cards.
  • It helps you recycle up to 3 Purery Quick Play spell if a Purery XYZ monster you control leaves the field. I also don't see that it requires a card effect so using a Kaiju against your XYZ could still net you the card advantage this card's second effect brings.
Cons
  • Hard once per turn for each effects (Which I think is fine as you can still use it again on your next turn).
Possible Ratio: 1-3. 3 could be a solid choice despite of having a hard opt restriction as you want to see Purery as early as possible and you would want to maximize every consistency card as possible.

DBAD-JP021 Purery Happy Memory
Quick-Play Spell Card
(1) Apply this effect to 1 card on the field (until the end of the next turn), then you can discard 1 card, and if you do, Special Summon 1 Level 1 “Purery” monster from your Deck. Once applied, the next time that card would be destroyed by card effect, it is not destroyed.
(2) A “Purery” Xyz Monster that has this card as material gains this effect.
• This card can attack monsters a number of times each Battle Phase, up to the number of “Purery Happy Memory” attached to it +1.

Pros
  • It can also protect other cards from card effect destruction and it lasts until the end of next turn.
  • It can also target face down cards so it's good if you want to protect something.
  • It can Special summon 1 Level 1 Purery monster from your Deck and the discard is not a cost. This means an Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring cannot waste your discard.
  • For every Purery Happy Memory, a Purery Xyz monster gains additional attack on monsters each Battle Phase.
  • It's Quick Play and isn't hard opt.
  • You can also use it on your opponent's card that relies on being destroyed so they cannot take advantage of that mechanic at least once.
Cons
  • It requires a discard to summon a Purery monster.
  • It requires a card to protect first with its (1) effect before you can special summon.
Possible Ratio: 3. A card that isn't hard opt and can summon the best and only monster in the main deck deserve 3 spots in my opinion.

DBAD-JP022 Purery Pretty Memory
Quick-Play Spell Card
(1) Each player gains 1000 LP, then you can discard 1 card, and if you do, Special Summon 1 Level 1 “Purery” monster from your Deck.
(2) A “Purery” Xyz Monster that has this card as material gains this effect.
• Once per turn: You can send 1 other card you control to the GY, then target 1 card your opponent controls; attach it to this card as material.

Pros
  • Like the first quick play spell, it can also Special Summon 1 Level 1 Purery monster from your Deck.
  • It isn't hard once per turn too.
  • If it becomes an Xyz material for a Purery Xyz monster, you can use 1 other card to attach 1 card your opponent controls as a material.
Cons
  • It lets your opponent gain 1000 LP as well.
  • It requires a discard to special summon.
Possible Ratio: I'd say 3 is optimal as well. Compare to other Purery Quick Play spells in this article, it has the easiest requirement to only be able to let both players gain 1000 LP. For as long as you have something to discard, you should be able to maximize its first effect to Special Summon.

DBAD-JP023 Purery Delicious Memory
Quick-Play Spell Card
(1) Make 1 monster on the field unable to be destroyed by battle (until the end of the next turn), then you can discard 1 card, and if you do, Special Summon 1 Level 1 “Purery” monster from your Deck.
(2) A “Purery” Xyz Monster that has this card as material gains this effect.
• Gains 300 ATK/DEF for each material attached to this card.

Pros
  • It protects any 1 monster on the field from being destroyed by battle. It's perfect since most of our monsters have weak stats.
  • It can also special summon 1 level 1 Purery monster from your deck.
  • It makes your Purery Xyz monster scarier with a boost of 300 ATK/DEF for every material attach to it when this card becomes a material. Just imagine if your Purery Xyz monster has 10 materials. o.0
  • Not hard opt!!
Cons
  • It requires a monster to protect from battle. Unless you have an existing monster, you would most likely rely on your opponent controlling one before you can special summon.
Possible Ratio: 1-3. It is still a consistency engine nonetheless so I'd try 3 and experiment with ratios.

DBAD-JP024 Pureryeap!? (Purery Leap!?)
Normal Trap Card
You can only activate 1 card with this card’s name per turn.
(1) Target 1 “Purery” Xyz Monster you control; Special Summon 1 “Purery” Xyz Monster with a different Rank from your Extra Deck, by using it as material, but return the Summoned monster to the Extra Deck during the End Phase of the next turn. (This is treated as an Xyz Summon. Transfer its materials to the Summoned monster.)
(2) You can banish this card, then target up to 3 “Purery” monsters in your GY; shuffle them into the Deck.

Pros
  • It's an easy access to their Rank 7.
  • It can help you recycle your Purery monsters so you won't ran out.
Cons
  • It's a trap card and their Rank 7 doesn't do anything spectacular on your opponent's turn without 5 or more materials.
  • The summoned monster will return to the Extra Deck which means all materials that were attached to it after you summon it on top of your Purery Xyz will be gone as ash too.
  • Hard Opt.
  • Only good mid to late game.
Possible Ratio: 0-1.

Summary:

Overall, I'd say that the archetype looks promising at first glance. It already has 15 starters to begin with (3 Purery, 3 of each Quick Play, 3 Cont Spell) so it should be pretty consistent. While it is too early to tell that it'll be the next meta deck of the next format, it definitely has the ingredients to become one.

We still have slot 018 missing and I am hoping that this last card is something that can complete the missing piece. Since the quick play requires a discard, it won't harm if they get a spell that can net card advantage either a draw power or another search. The theme looks pretty solid with what's revealed so far and we can only hope for the best. For me, this theme is definitely something to watch out for.

What can you say about the Purery archetype?
