What's NEXT for "Vernalizer"? | DABL Support Review

"Vernalizer, are we there yet?"

Yesterday, we have received several news and that includes the wave 2 of the Vernalizer archetype. Three cards have been revealed which includes one boss monster, one main deck monster and one field spell.
Vernalizer Archetype

Today, I'm going to do card reviews for the three new Vernalizer cards in Darkwing Blast (DABL) and if they successfully delivered what the archetype needs. Let's get started!

The Fairy Goddess has Awakened!

DABL-JP025 Harukeshou no Megami Vera / Vera, the Vernalizer Fairy Goddess
Fairy/Effect, EARTH, Lv 8, ATK 2400, DEF 3000
You can only use the 1st and 2nd effect of this card’s name each once per turn.
(1) You can target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; take control of it, and if you do, it becomes EARTH.
(2) During your opponent’s turn (Quick Effect): You can target 1 EARTH monster in your GY; Special Summon it.
(3) Once per turn, while you control 5 or more EARTH monsters, you can negate any monster effect activated by your opponent, and if you do, destroy that monster.

Card Review:

The real boss monster of the archetype! As one who has and used Vernalizer in the past, Vernalizer felt like it was designed only to support EARTH monsters in general but not to function as a solid theme. This shouldn't be the case that's why it's called an archetype in the first place. Now, we have received a strong boss monster that can put real pressure now.

Pros
  • It can control an opponent's monster at no extra cost. It also converts them to EARTH and the control is permanent. It now becomes part of the family and there's no turning back (thunder).
  • Every opponent's turn, you can revive an EARTH monster in your GY, This is helpful not only to fill your field with EARTH monsters but also to dodge cards that would banish cards from the grave. Maxx "C" is an EARTH monster that you can revive when you activated it as a response similar to how Splight Elf dodges Called by the Grave as it looks.
  • The last effect activates on resolution where you can negate any monster effect activated by the opponent.
Cons
  • The card itself doesn't have a way to summon itself when drawn. You always need to rely to your smaller Vernalizer Fairies or their field spell. Playing multiples of Vera, the Vernalizer Fairy Goddess would lead to brick hands. 1-2 is optimal as you don't want to just auto-lose if your single copy gets banished.
  • The negation effect could be a pain to fulfill as it requires 5 EARTH monsters. While that could be a breeze of air when you are able to successfully resolve multiple Vernalizer, that couldn't be the case in this meta full of multiple interruptions. Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring is also a major threat to this archetype.

DABL-JP026 Nae to Kasumi no Harukeshou / Vernalizer Fairy of Seedlings and Haze
Fairy/Effect, EARTH, Lv 3, ATK 400, DEF 800
You can only use the 1st effect of this card’s name once per turn.
(1) You can discard this card and 1 other monster or “Vernalizer Fairy” card; add 1 EARTH Fairy monster from your Deck to your hand, except “Vernalizer Fairy of Seedlings and Haze”, then you can Special Summon 1 EARTH monster from your GY, also you cannot activate monster effects for the rest of this turn, except EARTH monsters’.
(2) All monsters on the field lose 600 ATK, except “Vernalizer Fairy” monsters.

Card Review

Pros:
  • It acts as one of your starters. With Vernalizer Fairy of Hills and Blooms and World Soul - Carbon, you now have 9 starters. This one searches any EARTH Fairy monster from your Deck to your hand so it could also be a good tech for Madolche.
  • It weakens non-Vernalizer monster by 600 ATK and this stacks. If you control multiple Vernalizer Fairy of Seedings and Haze, you can further decrease the ATK of non-Vernalizer monsters. Pretty neat in protecting your Barrier Statue of Droughts.
Cons:
  • Like its fellow Vernalizer monster, using this card would require an additional monster or Vernalizer card making it a 1.5 card combo. Most likely, the one you will search would require another Vernalizer Fairy for you to abuse it so that makes it even harder. A single Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring could also cripple the combo as it's very fragile.
  • The ATK reduction isn't that spectacular and it also discourages you from playing non-Vernalizer monster unlesss you plan to keep them on defense position. This is my opinion.

DABL-JP066 Harukeshou no Hanasakari / Flower Bloom of the Vernalizer Fairy
Field Spell
You can only use the 2nd and 3rd effect of this card’s name each once per turn.
(1) All monsters you control gain 1000 ATK while you control 5 or more EARTH monsters.
(2) You can banish 1 “Vernalizer Fairy and Flower Buds” from your hand or GY; Special Summon 1 “Vera, the Vernalizer Fairy Goddess” from your Deck.
(3) If a “Vernalizer Fairy” monster(s) is Special Summoned from your GY: You can target 1 monster on the field or in either GY; return it to the hand.

Card Review

Pros
  • It allows you to search the boss monster of the deck which is neat.
  • It acts as another disruption when you revive a Vernalizer Fairy monster from the GY.
  • It makes all of your monsters larger while you have 5 EARTH monsters.
  • The artwork is relaxing to look at. XD
Cons
  • The requirement to search the boss monster is quite stiff in my opinion. It needs to banish Vernalizer Fairy and Flower Buds from hand or GY yet this field spell card also competes with the search of Vernalizer Fairy of the Hills and Blooms. Based on testing, it's actually better to search Vera, the Vernalizer Fairy Goddess than use this field spell's search.
  • To take advantage of its (1) effect, you need to control 5 EARTH monsters. Ruined Realm of Perleino can search a monster, destroy a card and buffs Fusion monsters and Tearalaments monsters by 500 without any drawback and Flower Bloom of the Vernalizer Fairy has what condition again? Unless we get a link 1 monster that searches this field spell, things MIGHT get different.
Summary

Vernalizer, as an archetype, is still quite new. While it shows some potential, it still falls short to its same-set released counterparts like Splights and Tearalaments. The deck still needs a card that could tie things together. A link 1 that searches their theme field spell or another card that can generate unfair advantage could be something that can make the archetype worth a second look.

In the meta full of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring and Maxx "C" for OCG, an archetype has to be prepared on how to combat these strategies. Is the best yet to come for Vernalizer or they are just getting started?
