How GOOD is the new "Diabellestarr" engine from AGE OF OVERLORD? | Tech Card Discussion

Hey RespectYGOers! I'm finally back with another article and today, we'll talk about the hottest engine right now in the OCG land no other than the Diabellestarr and Sinful Spoils engine!

Does this engine really have what it takes to make an impact? Why are people on the hunt to get this engine? Let's dive in!

Overview

Diabellestarr the Black Witch and the Sinful Spoils debuted in AGE OF OVERLORD as part of the new lore of the 12th series booster pack. This small theme also complements the strategy of the new theme called Snake-Eye which focuses on swarming with level 1 FIRE monsters and placing cards on the S/T zone to control the plays of the opponent. While Snake-Eye feels incomplete as a theme, Diabellestarr and the Sinful Spoils can mesh with other themes and has already produced excellent results on its debut in OCG.

Let's start by getting to know the cards involved in this engine!

Main Cards
1. Diabellestarr the Black Witch

Diabellestarr the Black Witch, as the name suggests, is the star of this new engine. By itself, it acts as a beater with a decent 2500 ATK and 2000 DEF stats almost reminiscent of a protagonist ace monster.

It has a built-in special summon (inherent) which can be done by just discarding any other card. Once summoned, it can set 1 Sinful Spoils Spell/Trap from your deck which is neat as it dodges Ash Blossom and Joyous Spring. Let's not forget that it can also revive herself by sending a card from your hand to the graveyard if it is sent from hand or field to the graveyard during your opponent's turn.

This card is played at 1 to 3 copies in the engine. Some people opt to play 1-2 copies only as the Sinful Spoils Hunter Fiend can also recycle from your GY. This new spellcaster monster already provides the threat on its own depending on the Sinful Spoils spell or trap that you will search.

2. "The Sinful Spoils Hunter Fiend"

This card is the main searcher (and only searcher) so far of Diabellestarr theme. Its first effect also gave us an easter egg that more Diabellestarr monsters will be introduced.

The best part is it's a quick play spell that means you can already use it right away during the Draw Phase like how you use Purrely memory spells so you can evade Droll & Lock Bird (Droll & Lock Bird can only respond on a search from Standby Phase onwards). Due to the pressure that comes within Diabellestarr the Black Witch, this can possibly bait an opponent's negation in my opinion.

This also has a GY effect to recycle other Sinful Spoils from banished or GY to deck to draw a card. Resolving it can net you a +1 in card advantage (provided Diabellestarr the Black Witch search effect resolves resulting into +0 card advantage) which can be useful in drawing your missing combo piece, an extender, or maybe a new hand trap to disrupt your opponent's plays. Be careful though in using it right away unless your goal is to dig your combo pieces as it could make you susceptible to Droll & Lock Bird.

Put 3 copies, no questions asked.

3. The Original Sinful Spoils Snake-Eye

This new spell is a path towards level 1 FIRE monsters and if you are playing a deck with level 1 FIRE monsters, you might want to consider getting the Diabellestarr engine. This spell is one of the main targets for Diabellestarr the Black Witch "search to set" effect.

It also has an ability to recycle used Diabellestar the Black Witch back to your deck to search another level 1 FIRE monster from your Deck! This means you'll have a free follow-up the following turn in case you ran out of resources!

1-2 copies. (Usually one since it is searchable anyway)

Optional/Theme-specific add ons

4. Snake-Eye Excel

Snake-Eye Excel is a new generic level 1 FIRE monster searcher. The main purpose of climbing into this first rather than directly to your level 1 FIRE is to add more extenders. Doing so though may put you at a risk of being prevented by Droll & Lock Bird after the search.

1 copy max for engine use.

5. Sinful Spoils of Betreyal - Silvia

If you will use Diabellestarr engine as a form of protection, you might want to consider adding this trap.

This trap can negate the effect any face-up card on the field at a cost of sending a Diabellestarr monster from your hand or face-up field to the GY. If you're not a fan of paying half LP for Solemn Judgment or if your deck doesn't have a way to protect you from mass removal then this card is for you. It also has a strong second effect that can negate any opposing effect that would try to respond to your Diabellestarr monster or Sinful Spoils effect.

1 copy if you want to consider it.

Where to use this engine?

This engine is so generic that it can work in almost any deck. Here are some decks that can maximize its use such as:
1. Rescue ACE (Rescue Ace Hydrant is a Level 1 FIRE monster)
2. T.G. (T.G. Rocket Salamander is a Level 1 FIRE monster)
3. Adventurer Synchron / Tenyi Swordsoul Good stuff
4. Evol (Evoltile Megachirella is a Level 1 FIRE monster)
5. Snake-Eye (All main monster except their boss are level 1)
6. Infernoid (Infernoid Decatron is a Level 1 FIRE monster)
7. Fire King

Summary

AGE OF OVERLORD (AGOV) released many interesting cards and Diabellestarr and the Sinful Spoils definitely deserve the attention they are getting.

It's quite ironic that The Sinful Spoils Hunter Fiend shows a wanted poster with Diabellestarr the Black Witch on the artwork as majority of the crowd still hunts this engine as we speak. Maybe that's how you know the the Diabellestarr engine is so good?

'til next time!
